Day 1: Welcome to Shillong – The Scotland of the East

My trip began in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

As I drove from the airport, the cool breeze and green hills instantly calmed my city-stressed mind.

Shillong is often called the Scotland of the East, and I could see why rolling meadows, pine trees, and colonial-era houses created a soothing blend of the old and the new.

I spent my first evening at Ward’s Lake, watching people paddle gently across the water while the sky turned pink.

The local cafes in Police Bazaar served hot momos and rich Khasi-style pork curry.

That night, I stayed at a cozy homestay, chatting with the host about the Khasi tribe and their matrilineal culture.

Day 2: Cherrapunji Where the Clouds Kiss the Earth

The next morning, I set off to Cherrapunji (Sohra), once the wettest place on Earth.

The journey was magical.

Mist rolled over the hills, and waterfalls danced down cliffs like silver ribbons.

My first stop was the Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Standing near the edge and hearing the thunder of water was humbling.

Later, I visited the Mawsmai Caves, a limestone wonders full of narrow passages and glowing stalactites.

And then came my favorite moment: watching the clouds drift over the Seven Sisters Falls, surrounded by endless green valleys.

By sunset, I reached my eco-resort and watched the clouds roll in through my window.

Day 3: Trekking to the Living Root Bridges A Walk to Remember

No trip to Meghalaya is complete without seeing the Living Root Bridges in Nongriat village.

This day started with a tough trek over 3000 steps down a steep forest trail.

But every step was worth it.

When I finally reached the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, I was speechless.

Built naturally by weaving the roots of rubber trees over decades, this bridge is a masterpiece of sustainable engineering.

I dipped my feet in the cool stream beneath and just soaked in the silence.

That night, I stayed in a rustic homestay in the village.

No phone signal, no distractions just the sound of insects and the gentle river.

Day 4: Mawlynnong Asia’s Cleanest Village

After the trek, I visited Mawlynnong, often called the cleanest village in Asia.

And yes, it truly lives up to the title. Every path was lined with flowering plants, and bamboo dustbins were everywhere.

The villagers take immense pride in cleanliness and eco-living.

I climbed a skywalk built on a bamboo tower and saw a panoramic view of the Bangladesh plains below.

It was breathtaking.

Mawlynnong also had a single-living root bridge, smaller than Nongriat’s, but beautiful in its own quiet way.

Day 5: Mystical Caves and Hidden Lagoons in Dawki

The last leg of my journey took me to Dawki, on the border of India and Bangladesh.

On the way, I stopped at the Shnongpdeng village, where the Umngot River flows crystal clear.

You’ve probably seen photos of boats floating on this river that look like they’re in mid-air yes, it’s real.

I took a serene boat ride, watching the riverbed beneath me.

I even dipped into the cool water. Later, I explored Mawshun Cave, less touristy but stunning in its raw beauty.

Border security was visible as Dawki lies right on the Indo-Bangladesh border.

But it felt peaceful just a river connecting two lands.

Why Meghalaya Feels Like a Poem

As I packed my bags and looked out one last time at the misty hills, I realized why Meghalaya is called the Abode of Clouds.

It’s not just the weather it’s the feeling.

Soft, peaceful, and ever-changing.

Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or an adventure lover

Meghalaya has something for everyone.

And what stood out the most?

The kindness of the Khasi people, the untouched nature, and the sense of being far from the chaos of the modern world.
