My Journey Begins in Assam

I had always heard about Assam its tea gardens, the mighty Brahmaputra, one-horned rhinos, and the colourful Bihu dance.

But it wasn’t until I packed my backpack and boarded a train to Guwahati that I truly understood its charm.

Assam welcomed me with wide rivers, green hills, and warm-hearted people.

Over two weeks, I explored ancient temples, wildlife sanctuaries, peaceful villages, and tasted some of the most unique dishes of my life.

If you’re planning to visit, here’s a travel story covering the top 10 places to visit in Assam, each with its own tale to tell.

1. Kaziranga National Park – Home of the One-Horned Rhino

My first adventure in Assam was at Kaziranga National Park.

I booked an early morning jeep safari, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous one-horned rhinoceros.

The sun had just begun to rise when I saw one standing in the misty grassland, calmly chewing away. It was majestic.

As we drove further, we spotted wild elephants, swamp deer, and a variety of birds. The air was fresh, and the silence of the jungle was magical.

Best Time to Visit: November to April
Don’t Miss: Jeep safari, elephant safari, birdwatching

2. Majuli – The World’s Largest River Island

After Kaziranga, I took a ferry across the Brahmaputra to reach Majuli, the world’s largest river island.

The moment I stepped on the island, time slowed down.

I stayed in a bamboo cottage run by a Mishing tribe family.

In the evenings, I watched the sunset by the river, and during the day, I visited ancient monasteries called Satras, where monks performed dances and rituals passed down for centuries.

Best Time to Visit: October to March
Don’t Miss: Satra culture, local crafts, cycling around the island

3. Sivasagar – Tales of the Ahom Kingdom

Next, I traveled to Sivasagar, a town with deep historical roots.

It was once the capital of the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for 600 years.

I explored the grand Rang Ghar (Asia’s oldest amphitheatre), and the beautiful Shiva Dol, which stands tall by a serene lake.

Walking through these ancient structures made me feel like I was stepping back in time.

4. Guwahati – The Gateway to Northeast India

Guwahati is where my journey began and ended.

It’s a perfect mix of modern and traditional Assam. My first stop was the famous Kamakhya Temple, located on the Nilachal Hill.

The temple is not only a sacred pilgrimage site but also offers a panoramic view of the city.

I also took a cruise on the Brahmaputra River during sunset  a magical experience I’d recommend to everyone.

5. Tezpur – City of Eternal Romance

Tezpur was a quiet, romantic town with legends woven into every corner.

According to myth, it’s the city of love, and you can feel that in its calm air and poetic gardens.

I visited Agnigarh, a hill garden telling the story of a legendary romance.

The views of the Brahmaputra River from here were stunning.

6. Haflong – The Only Hill Station in Assam

I wanted to see a different side of Assam, so I took a train to Haflong, the state’s only hill station.

It was peaceful, full of orange orchards, green hills, and quiet lakes.

I spent a day near Haflong Lake, watching children fish and women wash clothes, living simple lives.

I also visited nearby Jatinga, famous for its mysterious bird phenomenon.

7. Manas National Park – Where Wilderness Roams Free

If Kaziranga is about rhinos, Manas is about wild beauty. Located on the India-Bhutan border, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a tiger reserve.

I went on a forest safari and saw golden langurs, wild buffaloes, and even a leopard from a distance. What made it even more special was that it felt untouched — fewer tourists, more nature.

8. Hajo – Where Three Religions Meet

One morning, I visited Hajo, a spiritual town just an hour from Guwahati.

What amazed me was how Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists all have their sacred spots here.

I climbed the stone steps to Hayagriva Madhava Temple, believed by some Buddhists to be the place where Lord Buddha attained Nirvana.

Just nearby was Powa Mecca, a Muslim shrine. It was a peaceful example of harmony.

9. Dibrugarh – Tea Capital of India

In Dibrugarh, I finally saw where Assam tea comes from. Miles and miles of tea gardens stretched across the land.

I visited a tea estate, watched the plucking process, and even tasted fresh-brewed Assam tea under a banyan tree.

I stayed in a heritage tea bungalow  colonial, cozy, and surrounded by green.

10. Tinsukia – Gateway to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

My last stop was Tinsukia, from where I visited the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Unlike Kaziranga and Manas, this park is known for its riverine ecosystem.

We went on a boat safari and saw Gangetic dolphins jumping out of the water.

The silence of the forest, broken only by bird calls and water splashes, was unforgettable.
